    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: Drinking Too Much Water Can Make Retention Worse

Several common medical conditions cause people to retain water. Many women, for example, experience water retention prior to their menstrual cycle. Many conditions or problems will lead to water retention, and drinking excessive water will perpetuate the issue. Kidney disease or failure, arthritis and excess sodium intake all cause water retention. Drinking too much water with these conditions compounds the problem.

On the Other: Drinking Excess Water Will Not Cause Retention

Coincidentally, drinking too much water stops water retention. When you are dehydrated or low on water, your body will retain water to maintain hydration. Drinking excess water will allow the body to discard extra water, thus reducing water retention.

    Bottom Line

Water retention, also called edema, can be caused by a number of underlying reasons--deficiencies in nutrition, drug side effects and liver problems, just to name a few. Unless you have some kind of health issue or too much sodium in your diet, drinking too much water will not cause water retention.
