    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Baseball was originally recognized in New York in 1857 by a governing body called the National Association of Base Ball Players. There were 16 local area clubs associated with the league. The first major league that had staying power was the National League, which is still in existence today. It was founded in 1876 and makes up one of the two leagues in Major League Baseball--the other being the American League.
