This type of anxiety is typically experienced while listening to others speak. In particular, students learning a foreign language may experience listening anxiety.
Listening anxiety is not the same as a generalized anxiety disorder, a condition in which a person may feel anxious for no recognizable reason. However, a generalized anxiety disorder may coexist with other types of anxiety.
According to a 2008 research study published in the journal "TESL-EJ," students learning a foreign language cited a "lack of clarity, lack of visual support, lack of repetition," poor enunciation, rapid speech and unfamiliar vocabulary as factors that contribute to listening anxiety.
According to a 2008 study published in "Foreign Language Annals," a low-anxiety classroom environment may help ease listener anxiety and help students participate more readily.
Listening anxiety can inhibit a person's ability to learn and utilize information that is spoken to them. Listening anxiety can also negatively affect a student's performance on listening examinations.
