To be clear, AIDS is the advanced form of HIV and as such AIDS cannot be directly spread by sexual contact with an infected person. AIDS occurs when the immune cell count in the human body drops too low to fight off the HIV infection. At this point death can occur in only a few years.
However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HIV can be spread through sexual contact with an infected person. This is the most common form of transmission, and the disease can be contracted through a single sexual encounter. Other forms of transmission include sharing needles, mother to infant, and in rare cases through medical blood transfusion.
HIV can be spread through a single sexual encounter, and AIDS is the inevitable outcome of HIV. Do not have unprotected sex with an infected partner, and always consult with a physician if you think you may have contracted HIV.
