As this question is very old, you may not even care anymore, but here's an answer anyway:
poecilonym
Definition: synonym; one of a variety of names for a thing
It's an antiquated word and not found in most modern dictionaries, but can be found here:
http://phrontistery.info/p.html
http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/synonym shows a lot. None of them are perfect, but they could be used in a worst-case scenario or for poetic reasons.
you mean a synonym for synonym? wouldn't that create a black hole?
I'd use something like 'analog', I think that describes it best.
Others might be 'exchangeable', 'similarity'.
Found online:
analogue, annotation, answer, characterization, clarification, clue, comment, commentary, cue, delimitation, delineation, demarcation, denotation, determination, diagnosis, drift, elucidation, exemplification, explanation, explication, exposition, expounding, fixing, formalization, gloss, individuation, interpretation, key, outlining, rationale, rendering, rendition, representation, settling, signification, solution, synonym, terminology, translation
adequation, agreement, alikeness, compatibility, conformity, correlation, correspondence, equality, evenness, exchangeability, identity, interchangeability, interchangeableness, likeness, match, par, parallel, parity, similarity, synonym, synonymy
I think analogue comes the closest.
***Elitheeli did the same thing.
Antiantonym.
Is there a synonym for 'synonym'? Not that I'm aware of. You might be thinking of 'homonym', which defines two words which are spelled and pronounced the same, but which mean something different. 'Hold', to grip and 'hold' the cargo space on a ship are homonyms.
Good question. I couldn't think of any synonyms for the word synonym itself but here are some synonyms for it's adjective, synonymous:
Comparable, equal, exchangeable, interchangeable, similar, the same.
Damn, thats a trickie one....
same meaning
Let me guess....we are doing your crossword puzzle for you again?
Are you sure that that's synonym and not just a strange case of antonym?
Comparable, equal, similar or the same.
Yes there is, its not a modern word more like 1800's but it is poecilonym. You cannot find this in today's dictionary but to impress your friends you could try(:
Equivalent. Metonym. Both work pretty well.
1) "adequation, agreement, alikeness, compatibility, conformity, correlation, correspondence, equality, evenness, exchangeability, identity, interchangeability, interchangeableness, likeness, match, par, parallel, parity, similarity"
