    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Danish painter Lili Elbe was the first person to undergo a sex change operation. Born Einar Wegener, Lili led a double life for almost 20 years. She underwent five separate (male to female) surgeries, the first occurring in 1930. Complications stemming from the last surgery resulted in her death.
