Otitis interna refers to infection of the deep inner ear. Also known as labyrinthitis because it affects the ear's labyrinth cavity, it can lead to loss of balance, or virtigo. Swelling and inflammation also result. Most cases are brought on by viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, such as cold or flu, according to WebMD. There are no medications for viruses and it takes several weeks for labyrinthitis to go away on its own.
Otitis interna occasionally results from bacterial infection. In such cases, doctors use intravenous antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, according to Merck Medical Library. To relieve nausea and dizziness from vertigo, medications such as meclizine, dimenhydrinate, and diazepam are prescribed. Corticosteroids may improve balance, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Degrees of infection in the inner ear vary. When caused by influenza virus, time is the best cure for the ear infection that results. If bacterial, dosages of IV antibiotics might be required to kill the microbes in the intricate labyrinth deep in the ear. Prescribed cortizone-like medications can reduce the redness, swelling and itching as well as vertigo symptoms.
