The chickenpox vaccine uses a live form of the varicella-zoster virus which takes up permanent residence in the vaccinated person, retaining the capacity to cause shingles, notes Jacquelyn G. Black, Ph.D. Using the vaccine may increase chances of a future shingles epidemic, according to Gary S. Goldman, Ph.D.
Licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since 1995, the chickenpox vaccine should be used to prevent chickenpox, whereas the shingles vaccine, licensed for use since 2006, should be used to prevent shingles in adults older than 60, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Shingles seldom appears in people younger than 50. Since U.S. clinicians have been inoculating young children against chickenpox only since 1995, decades may pass before epidemiologists can determine how, if at all, widespread use of the chickenpox vaccine affects the incidence of shingles.
