Styrofoam, also known as polystyrene, is often used as a container for leftover food and to-go dinners. According to Harvard University Medical School, some polystyrene is safe for microwave usage. Check the label for microwave safety before heating Styrofoam. Microwave dinner trays are often safe for one-time usage, but should be ventilated.
Styrofoam often contains the chemical bisphenol A, also known as BPA. This chemical is a known carcinogen and can be dangerous for humans to ingest. BPA can be released from polystyrene when it is heated, causing potential health problems.
Only use containers that are labeled "microwave-safe" to heat food in a microwave. Plastics like polystyrene can contain harmful chemicals. A glass or porcelain container is a better choice if possible.
