HIV/AIDS patients have several options of medications to choose from in order to suppress the viral load in their bodies and keep their immune systems functioning normally. The FDA has approved more than 30 antiretroviral drugs, and each drug is created to tackle a different task in the body. Some control the spread of the virus, while others are designed to suppress side effects. There are five classes of drugs (reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, fusion inhibitors, entry inhibitors and integrase inhibitors), and doctors recommend that you take a combination from at least two of the classes. This is called a combo.
In July of 2006, the FDA approved the first one-pill, once-a-day product to treat HIV. This drug, called Atripla, combines three different Reverse Transcriptase (RT) inhibitors. The ease of taking only one pill has its benefits, but there are a few strict restrictions. It must be taken on an empty stomach and preferably at bedtime due to some of the side effects, such as drowsiness and trouble concentrating.
There are many types of drugs to treat HIV/AIDS, and according to Dr. John Piper of Infectious Disease Associates, researchers are continuing to develop many new medications each year. There are several options that you can talk with your doctor about to ensure that your HIV medication regimen will fit into your daily lifestyle.
