Urinary tract infections (UTIs) do not necessarily lead to impotence (erectile dysfunction). However, complications of UTIs can still be serious. The Mayo Clinic reports that chronic or untreated UTIs can lead to kidney infections which may lead to kidney damage.
UTIs in older men may be related to prostatitis, infections that cause an enlarged prostate, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC). Prostatitis can cause complications like epididymitis (inflammation of a testicular tube), abscess in the prostate, semen abnormalities and infertility. The Mayo Clinic also reports that treatment for prostatitis can lead to erectile dysfunction.
Urinary tract infections do not necessarily lead to impotence. However, some types of UTI (prostatitis) as well as the treatments for prostatitis may lead to erectile dysfunction and other sexual side effects in men.
