Designated as the "Best Low Cost/No Frills Airline" through an OAG Airline Industry Award, Southwest Airlines was the launch company for several new Boeing products. Southwest Airline's entire fleet is made up of Boeing aircraft. Formulated as an airline in 1971, Southwest began their service using three aircraft made by Boeing. As of December 2009, the corporation has 537 planes in its fleet. The types of Boeing planes utilized by Southwest Airlines are from the Boeing 737 series. The medium age of Southwest Airline's planes is just over 10 years. Each plane averages 6.25 flights per day. Seat pitch on all planes stand at 32 to 33 inches with a seat width of 17 inches. The 737 series accommodates the short- to medium-haul flights and typifies the needs of Southwest. The 737-300 series fleet was purchased in 1984 and was configured for 137 seats. The 737-500 series fleet was obtained in 1990 and totals 122 seats, while the 737-700 series was acquired in 1997 with 137 seats on each plane. Breaking new ground, William Boeing built the Boeing's first airplane in 1916. Since then, Boeing Corporation revamped itself to become a major player in the construction of modern jetliners.
