  • i just searched it: Group B streptococcus is a bacterium which grows normally in the bowels (and stool) of people. At any given time, about 25% of people have a group B streptococcus in their bowel at high enough concentrations for us to detect. Group B streptococcus rarely causes infection in healthy people. Infections due to group B streptococcus are associated with older age, seriously compromised immune systems, and problems with the bowel or bladder which make it easier for these bacteria to invade deeper into the body. For instance, bladder catheters allow bacteria to grow in the urine and cause infection more easily. Bowel problems such as diverticular disease, cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease make it easier for the bacteria to invade damaged parts of the bowel wall and cause serious infections such as bacteremia. Group B streptococcal infection is not transmitted from person to person, and you do not have to worry about contact with an infected person.
  • Just want to add that if you are pregnant, make sure your doctor doses you with antibiotics before delivery b/c it can cause problems to the baby. Don't freak though, it's very common and easily treated.
  • Group B streptococcus, or group B strep, is a bacterium that causes life- threatening infections in newborns. Group B strep can also cause disease in pregnant women, the elderly, and adults with other illnesses. Many people carry group B strep bacteria in their bodies without developing infection or illness. However, the bacteria can become deadly to people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women can transmit group B strep to their newborns at birth. Group B strep is the most common cause of blood infections and meningitis in newborns. Most cases of group B strep disease in newborns can be prevented by giving certain pregnant women antibiotics during labor.
  • Yes i had a liitle girl 20months ago now and on giving birth she was rushed straight to intensive care NICU without any warning as it was such a low risk pregnancy the doctors could not seem to find out what was up with her so it was just a waiting game for me but it was when i actually said to my birth partner that i noticed a strong smell on the avrival of my daughter and could still smell it that she said to me that she had noticed it to but was to shy to say anything i then asked the midwife why this would be and then she took a swab. The results came back that i had group strep B and that this could be why my little girl was so poorley they told the NICU straight away and chanele was put on some antibiotics and got better day by day from then so we finally got to take our baby home. But it just goes to show i had not raised a concern with the midife then i would of nerver had the swab and found out what was wrong with my little girl but to everybody out there there you do not need to worry all this could of been easily treated with some antibiotics given to me threw labour which would of stopped my my baby getting it .
