Do you carry a defective gene? I carry the Cystic Fibrosis gene, so I have to be careful not to have children with another carrier.

• The neurofibromatoses are genetic disorders of the nervous system that primarily affect the development and growth of neural (nerve) cell tissues. These disorders cause tumors to grow on nerves and produce other abnormalities such as skin changes and bone deformities. Although many affected persons inherit the disorder, between 30 and 50 percent of new cases arise spontaneously through mutation (change) in an individual's genes.

• They have a 50/50% chance of inheriting it. It's not overly uncommon in the NF1 stage - NF2 is severely debilitating and much rarer.

• Well, it seems to run in families - likely it is several genes rather than just one and scientists haven't pin-pointed how it works. There's also the possibility it has something to do with the womb environment of the mother before the child is born. Plus, there are bipolar people who aren't related to anyone else bipolar, so the whole thing is slightly debatable.
