There was a theory out that this is the result of narrower fitting shoes fashioning the shape of the toes from childhood. I don't know if it is completely true, as my sisters both have long toes like monkeys, while I have stubby toes - I think that genes must play a part in it.

It's called Morton's Toe and it's not uncommon. According to Wikipedia, 10% of the world's population probably has it, but take those statistics with a grain of salt. I have it too and it's never bothered me. I've seen lots of people with it as well.
