Ordinarily, your stomach shouldn't hurt after eating. Even if you eat too much, you should feel full, perhaps uncomfortably full, but not in pain. If a particular food hurts your stomach, you likely suffer from an allergy or other intolerance. If all food hurts your stomach, consult a doctor because you may be suffering from a more serious condition. Peptic ulcers form when acid erodes stomach or intestinal lining. Besides pain, symptoms include bloating, nausea and vomiting blood. Doctors treat ulcers with antacids and antibiotics. When the appendix suffers inflammation, patients first feel pain near the belly button. The pain later travels toward the hip. Appendicitis patients die without surgery. Bile can crystallize into stones in the gallbladder or bile duct. Medication or shock waves dissolve small gallstones and surgery removes larger ones. When the stomach protrudes through a diaphragm tear, it hurts the gullet or stomach after meals. Though mild hiatal hernias require no treatment, painful hernias need treatment such as anti-secretion drugs or surgery. Most seriously, but more rarely, pain after eating can indicate stomach cancer. Doctors order biopsies when stomach exams detect abnormal tissue.
