It's possible to plant a physical bug or malware in a modern cell phone that allows other people to listen in on your conversations.
It's also fairly easy to listen in on cell-phone calls without physically bugging your phone. According to Bruce Sterling in "The Hacker Crackdown," intercepting random cell-phone conversations was a game played by early hackers.
Don't use your cell-phone for secure communications. Even if it isn't physically bugged, it's not difficult for a determined person to hear everything you say.
