According to Larry McDaniel, D.V.M., cats learned to knead when nursing from their mothers. The action caused the mother's milk to drop, an immediate reward that reinforced the action. Furthermore, McDaniel says that it is a way to claim territory, as the paws leave scent on the kneaded surface.
Since kneading is connected to the contentment of food and Mom, kneading is performed anytime the cat feels such fulfillment. This can occur when a cat is on a soft, warm surface that may remind it of its mother. It can also be triggered by the cat's acceptance of and affection for its surrogate mother.
Kneading can also occur when the cat is sexually stimulated. Males may knead when aroused and females might when in heat. Care should be taken when distracting the cat from this kneading. Fluffy may become feisty or aggressive when interrupted.
The cat will appear relaxed during regular kneading, while sexual kneading may cause the cat to tense, growl or have an erection.
If any kneading is bothersome, tell kitty "no" firmly, touch its back and place the cat on the floor. It is also helpful to keep the cat's nails trimmed for less damage during kneading.
