The version of the Bible that Roman Catholics use is similar to the Bible that Protestant religions use. The Catholic version contains a few additional books, though, that Protestant religions have chosen not to include. The Catholic Bible contains both the Old and New Testaments. The Catholic Bible contains 73 books, seven more than Protestant Bibles. The books of Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and 1 and 2 Macabees only appear in Catholic Bibles. Catholic Bibles also contain chapters 10 through 16 of Esther, Daniel 3:24-90, and Daniel 13 and 14. Protestants do not consider these sections to be divinely inspired, thus leave them out. Catholic Bibles will often feature the Latin phrases nihil obstat and imprimatur in the Bible's opening pages. Nihil obstat is the name of the authorities in the Catholic Church who have reviewed that particular version of the Bible and found it to be free of doctrinal or moral error. Imprimatur is the authority who gives his permission for that Bible to be printed. While not required, most Catholic Bibles will include reference notes on each page that give context to typically unclear passages. They often will also include a dictionary of terms.
