Help answer this question below.
An itchy dog is a miserable dog. Most itching in dogs has to do with causes that are not a simple fix, so it's important to determine the root cause of the itching. However, there are some quick things you can try to help relieve the itching, at least temporarily. Dogs who itch frequently suffer from allergies brought on by food allergies, flea allergies or contact allergies. It's important that a veterinarian help you to determine the cause before treating your dog. You can bathe your dog with a hypoallergenic shampoo to rid your dog of whatever was on his skin causing him to scratch; if your dog has fleas, treating him with a flea systemic such as Frontline will help remove the cause. You can try Benadryl under a veterinarian's supervision to calm the itch. Food and flea allergies may take weeks to clear up; contact allergy treatment takes a day or so after the offending substance is removed. Benadryl is fast acting and may help within hours but should be used only temporarily, unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. Give 1 mg per pound of body weight of Benadryl, or as prescribed by your veterinarian. Benadryl can interact with medications, so always consult a veterinarian. Also, you should not give Benadryl to a dog with heart, lung, prostate or eye problems. "The Compete Idiot's Guide to Dog Health and Nutrition," Margaret H. Bonham; 2003.Identification
