    The nape of the neck is a popular place to get a tattoo for both men and women, but there's no doubt that it's more popular among women and often seen as a feminine choice. It's not as clear why women in particular would prefer this placement.

    Nape Of The Neck

    The nape of a woman's neck has long been considered an erotic zone in both Western and non-Western cultures. According to Hanami Web, for example, the nape of the neck is particularly erotic in Japan, and the kimono of a married woman is pulled away to expose the region. It is an area very sensitive to touch, with many nerve endings.

    Public And Private

    Part of the appeal may be the "peek-a-boo" effect. If a woman's hair is long and worn down, the tattoo is covered and private. When it's swept up for a more formal hairstyle--or lifted by a lover's hand--the tattoo design is suddenly revealed.

    Popular Designs

    Just about any tattoo design can be placed on the back of the neck. However, some popular trends can be discerned. Writing and script seems to be in vogue, often single words either in English or another language such as Sanskrit or Japanese kanji characters. Flowers, stars and tribal designs are also popular.

    Pain and Healing

    With placement so near the spine, a neck tattoo can be more painful to receive than tattoos on other parts of the body. Movement of the neck can also make the healing tattoo more prone to scabbing. However, overall healing time may be a bit shorter due to the dense nerve and blood supply to the area, and the risk of infection may be lower.

    Celebrity Tattoos

    There are dozens of celebrities with ink in this particular location. Christina Aguilera has "Xtina" in script tattooed on the back of her neck. Britney Spears sports three Sanskrit characters at the nape of her neck. Alyssa Milano has a word in Hindi that means "absolute." VIctoria Beckham has a line in Hebrew from the Song of Solomon running down her spine, starting right at her hairline. Singer Pink may have the most creative celebrity back-of-the-neck tattoo: she has the bar code of her hit album Missundaztood inked there.

    As neck is a wonderful place to get tattoos. Because it's easy seen and most often times women can show their tattoos to the world easily. On the other hand if they want to cover it in office or formal conditions then they can cover them easily. That's why neck tattoos are very popular amongst women.
