There have been alot. The numbers are still being worked on, but there has been a report that 16 cats have died and 1 dog. Thousands of others have been reported ill because of the recalled food.

I work in the food industry, and I can tell you that only about 2 % of all HUMAN food poisoning gets reported. I'm sure there are many who nobody even realized was related until it came on the news.

My cats ate it on March 19, 2007 and one became very sick. A few hours after they ate it, their brand was shown on the news. I called Hill's (Science Diet) and was assured that even though the UPC numbers matched, there was no chance my babies would have a problem. I asked him how there could be a problem because right on the label it states: "MADE IN USA", there is no mention of China. The customer service rep (or whatever) assured me that the food came from Kansas. He lied. One of my cats began vomiting blood on the 22nd. Her vet bills reached the thousands...but I am so lucky she survived and it's now more than a year later. Ours was the only case at our vet's office. I dealt with Hill's for months, getting no where--just one lie after another. I have been lied to so much by that customer service rep (or whoever he is), that I will NEVER again buy another product from that company--anything! So far, I have done nothing as far as the settlement goes--I am just grateful my little princess survived. I did not ask for a refund on the food, I saved the cans...just in case they are ever needed for testing or to prove that they were not really MADE IN USA, they were CANNED in the USA.
