Help answer this question below.
Tick collars---introduced in 1964---are made from specialized plastic that releases a pesticide that paralyzes and later kills ticks. Tick collars are particularly effective against ticks because ticks tend to seek out and attach to the head and neck regions of the animal, according to LivingWithBugs.com.
Tick collars are less effective than more modern tick remedies such as topically applied medications, because tick-collar chemicals do not always reach the hindquarters of large dogs. Also, pets may develop an irritation from using tick collars called flea-collar dermatitis. According to Rodale.Com, tick collars expose humans to dangerous tick-collar chemicals.
Tick collars may benefit pets that are outside a good deal of the time, but are generally not as effective on large dogs or pets with sensitivities to the tick-collar chemicals. Care should also be taken when using tick collars around humans due to the toxicity of tick-collar chemicals.
