    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

According to the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS), section 1-2-102, entitled "Rules for Determining Residence," a place of abode is your principal place of residence within the state. The CRS codifies the laws which govern all activity in Colorado.

    Definition

A place of abode, according to CRS, is the residence where your habitation is fixed and is the place you intend to return to after any length of absence.

    Types

Your abode or residence can be a home, condo, apartment, room in a house or a mobile home.

    Exclusion

Use of the addresses of vacant lots or businesses is not accepted as a place of abode.

    Residency

If you have an abode in another state, you cannot be considered a resident of Colorado. Also, if--as a Colorado resident--you move to another state with the intent of permanently relocating, you lose your Colorado residency 30 days after departure.

    Considerations

Several factors are taken under consideration in determining your legal place of abode in Colorado. Things which are used to validate your place of residence include income tax records, sources of income, vehicle registration, where your spouse or children reside and how much time you spend at your residence.
