According to World Law Direct, more than half of the 5 percent of contested speeding tickets are dismissed by the judge. Those who still lose the case after contesting typically receive a reduced sentence and/or fine. Thus, statistics are in favor of pleading not guilty.
You may want to plead guilty to small infractions that carry a fine or add a point to your driving record. To fight a ticket, you may have to hire a lawyer and spend time researching local traffic laws. Unless you are facing a criminal charge, a guilty plea may be more convenient.
You probably should refrain from pleading guilty in traffic court, especially for serious offenses such as drunk driving and/or if you have a good driving record. You also have plenty of opportunities to plea bargain before any trial by pleading not guilty. Additionally, prosecutors often offer good deals for first-time offenders, even without legal counsel present, and keeping a clean record will help with future offenses.
