Gallbladder surgery, or a cholecystectomy, involves removing the gallbladder---most likely for gallstones. What to expect after the operation will depend on whether you had a traditional open procedure or a laparoscopic procedure. A laparoscopic procedure might require a one-night stay in the hospital, but most patients go home the same day. You need to stay two to four days for an open procedure. You typically recover from laparoscopic surgery in seven to 10 days while an open procedure can keep you out of commission for four to six weeks, according to Mayo Clinic. You might experience nausea and vomiting after this type of surgery, according to the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Other possible discomforts include loss of appetite, muscle aches from anesthesia, soreness, diarrhea and for laparoscopic surgery---pain in the shoulder and stomach for up to a week due to the gas used to inflate the abdomen during surgery. You should not have any dietary restrictions after this type of surgery. SAGES recommends calling your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: fever, yellowing of the skin and eyes, abdominal pain that gets worse, bloating, drainage from the incision, shortness of breath, significant vomiting, redness around the incision and the inability to eat or drink.Hospital Stay
