Cobbler is a dessert, often made in summer due to the availability of fresh fruit during that time. However you can also use frozen or canned fruit and make it any time. The "cobbler" part of the fruit cobbler is a crust or cake. Some people make cobbler by placing a single pie crust over a layer of fruit in a casserole dish. One common type of cobbler is made with a layer of fruit on the bottom of the dish, topped with a slightly sweet biscuit-style dough, and then baked. Pour cake batter into a pan and drop the fruit on top to make a cobbler that has the fruit in the topping, rather than two separate layers. The cake will bake up around the fruit so there's a bit of fruit in each bite. Blackberries, raspberries, apples and peaches are popular fruits to use in cobbler. A fruit crisp is similar to cobbler, but the topping on the crisp is made from rolled oats, butter and brown sugar.
