Colon cancer surgery focuses on removing the cancerous cells and the infected parts of the colon in an effort to halt the spread of cancer. After surgery, a variety of treatments may be needed to prevent the cancer from returning. High-energy radiation treatments are occasionally used after colon cancer surgery to destroy any cancer cells that may have been left behind. This treatment is typically only used when the cancer has attached to an internal organ or the abdominal wall. According to the American Cancer Society, chemotherapy drugs have been shown to increase the survival rate for patients after colon cancer surgery. Chemotherapy will not only destroy any cancer cells that were missed during surgery, but also prevent the cancer from returning. To allow time for the body to heal properly, the patient will not be allowed to eat or drink for several days after colon cancer surgery. A nasogastric tube will be placed into the stomach through the nose; this tube will suction out the air and liquids from the stomach. Occasionally, the surgeon will be unable to reconnect the colon after the surgery. In this case, a colostomy bag will be attached to an opening in the abdomen to collect body waste. Treatment will be necessary to ensure proper functioning and care of the colostomy. A colonoscopy will typically be recommended within one year of colon cancer surgery; the colonoscopy will detect cancer recurrence. The physician might also recommend routine medical imaging tests and blood tests to detect early signs of recurrence. American Cancer Society: What Happens After Treatment?
