Unsecured debt is where borrows are granted a loan or credit without the need to guarantee repayment by putting up their personal property. Common forms of unsecured debt include credit cards and personal loans. Borrowers may be in a position where they don't have or don't wish to provide collateral for a secured loan. Unsecured debt gives them access to additional cash and/or credit without the need to put their personal property in jeopardy. Unsecured debt typically comes with higher interest rates than secured debt. Credit cards, for example, feature higher interest rates than secured financial instruments, including car loans or mortgages. Borrowers benefit from unsecured debt by getting access to additional funds with relative ease. Lenders benefit by profiting from the high interest rates, although they often are dealing with people with poor credit so they can run the risk of default. In the case of unsecured loans, the relatively easy application process and the lender's willingness to grant the loan means it can often be approved more quickly than a secured loan. They may also have access to additional funds during the course of the loan. Borrowers who stretch their loan or credit card repayments over a long time may be faced with paying an exorbitant amount of interest. Therefore, unsecured debt should be paid back as quickly as possible to minimize the interest paid. With unsecured loans, borrowers should be sure that the loan contract does not call for a penalty if the loan is paid off earlyPurpose
