Because breeding is so important, the dog industry has set up kennel clubs to track and register dogs of pure-blooded stock. The AKC is one such kennel club. The AKC, or American Kennel Club, is the oldest and most well-established kennel club covering the entire United States. It registers some 140 different breeds of dogs. The first meeting to create the AKC was held in 1884 by members of the Philadelphia Kennel Club. The AKC was developed to be a "club of clubs," or a collection of all the smaller clubs in the United States. The AKC keeps a registration of its members, divided by specific breeds of dogs. This AKC registration is a certification of a dog's breeding and pure-blooded status. To register with the AKC, a dog must come from parents of pure blood who are AKC registered. The AKC promotes specific activities for its members, including seminars, meetings and dog shows for owners. The AKC is not the only kennel club in the United States. The CKC, or Continental Kennel Club, is a competing club though it is not as established. Cities and states also boast kennel clubs unique to their regions. The Facts
