Dog mace is a portable, sprayable personal defense product designed or marketed for use in repelling dogs. The term dog "mace" may refer to the dog repellent manufactured by the manufacturer Mace. The term "mace" is also used generically to describe any number of different brands of pepper spray for use against humans or animals, such as those manufactured by Halt!, SABRE. While both human and animal pepper spray repellents use the same ingredient, the amount of the active ingredient in dog pepper spray is generally less than the amount found in pepper sprays made for use against humans. Dog mace, similar to other pepper sprays, uses capsaicin, a chemical irritant derived from plants of the genus Capsicum. The inert ingredients commonly found in pepper spray products are emulsifiers, such as propylene glycol, and propellants, such as tetrafluoroethane. Dog repellent pepper spray can be purchased and used by anyone in accordance to local and state law, and these products are effective on dogs and other animals of comparable size. However, dog repellent products are commonly used by letter carriers, meter readers and other individuals who regularly approach private residences in their work. Mace Muzzle brand dog pepper spray sells for $14.95 on the manufacturer's website, but can be found for cheaper at other online retailers. Other brands, such as Halt! and DirectStop range in price from around $4.00 to $15.00.Description
