Chondroitin glucosamine msm is a supplement that is used to relieve pain and improve mobility in people who suffer from osteoarthritis. The supplement is a combination of three compounds: chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate and methylsulfonylmethan (MSM). Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, is associated with the wearing down and breakdown of the cartilage in the joints, knees, hips and spine. It often affects, especially, the base of the thumb and the base of the big toe. Chondroitin sulfate occurs normally in the body. It binds with proteins and forms building blocks which are essential in forming cartilage, ligaments and tendons. It also blocks enzymes that break down cartilage and enhances the shock-absorbing properties of collagen. Glucosamine sulfate occurs normally in the body. It helps to make the cartilage in the joints strong and rigid. Glucosamine is a precursor of chondroitin, and both are components in the production of collagen and cartilage. They have the potential to rebuild cartilage that is worn away with osteoarthritis. Methylsulfonylmethan ( MSM ) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound, and is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. It helps to lessen inflammation, increases the blood supply to wounded areas, reduces muscle spasms and softens scar tissue. In 1999 the American College of Rheumatology did a study that found that the compound of chondroitin glucosamine msm reduced signs and symptoms and slowed the progress of osteoarthritis of the knees. It also improved the lubrication of fluids in the joints, reduced swelling and improved joint flexibility. Chondroitin glucosamine msm is produced from shell food products. Therefore, people with allergies need to be cautious. People with diabetes and those who take blood thinners and other medications should consult a doctor before taking this supplement as it could interact and interfere with the effectiveness of medicines that you already take.
