    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Protein is one of the structural components of all cells in the body. Hair follicles are made of proteins and require a constant supply of amino acids through the bloodstream to maintain proper hair growth. Proteins can be consumed by everyday dietary means, but oftentimes additional protein intake is needed via supplements.

    Types of Proteins

Complete proteins contain eight essential amino acids found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products. Incomplete proteins don't have all eight amino acids; these are found in nuts, plants, grains, seeds and vegetables. Amino acids are not created by the body and must be consumed.

    Amino Acids in Hair

In hair fiber production, cysteine is the most common amino acid. Cysteine contains sulfur molecules that cross-link each other and form chemical bonds from which hair gets its strength.

    Vitamins

Vitamins are the most common hair protein supplements. Vitamin B12 is an anti-stress vitamin and is a hair regrowth stimulator. Other vitamins that promote healthy hair growth are vitamins E and C.

    Liquid and Powder Supplements

Mineral proteins found in powder and liquid diet supplements help the body absorb vitamins and proteins. Silicon and zinc are the minerals most commonly found in the supplements and stimulate hair formation. Whey protein powder is a popular blend.

    Precautions

Excess intakes of hair protein supplements can produce adverse effects. Too much vitamin A can cause coarse, dry hair. Be cautious when taking supplements in addition to a protein-rich diet.

Protein and amino acid supplements are used for healthy hair growth.
Follicles produce hair shafts composed mainly of a protein called keratin, which is made of amino acids. The body produces some amino acids; others are obtained through protein-rich diets
Protein and amino acid supplements are meant to treat deficiency due to low dietary intake of these nutrients, or because the body doesn't synthesize them. People usually take them to help treat hair loss (alopecia), hair thinning, or weak or brittle hair, but they are beneficial for overall good health.
