Canine pregnancy can be difficult to detect in comparison to human pregnancies. Dogs undergo a gestation period of approximately sixty days, but this will vary slightly from breed to breed. If you suspect your dog is pregnant, she should be seen by a veterinarian for confirmation. Behavioral changes are not unusual for pregnant canines. This could mean she becomes more affectionate, restless or she may simply wish to be left alone. Dogs will begin to gain weight during pregnancy. However, they may also show a loss of appetite, which may worry owners―but is actually completely normal in canine pregnancy and is similar to the morning sickness that people experience. As pregnancy progresses, the abdomen may increase in size to accommodate puppy growth. The nipples and surrounding areas may also become swollen and enlarged in preparation for milk production. As the due date nears, the owner may be able to see or feel puppy movement. Movement may be especially obvious during the last few days prior to birth, which is when the puppies are moving into place. Pregnant dogs may be x-rayed during the last few days of pregnancy to give the owner an idea of how many pups to expect. This is ideal because should an issue arise or a puppy is missing, the owner can get the necessary veterinary care.Behavioral Changes
