Nurses are required to take continuing education in many states. Although completing education takes time, learning new information is beneficial to nurses, their employers and patients. Classes that focus on new medications and their administration aid nurses in minimizing errors and ensuring that patients get the proper care. Such classes also focus on the importance of documentation, and help protect employers. Continuing education, particularly if it culminates in an additional degree, can lead to job promotions or make it easier to find a higher-paying position. Many classes train nurses to handle more responsibility by providing information about administration, leadership and management. Continuing nursing education gives nurses an opportunity to brush up on knowledge they may not have used recently or to gain a more technical background in their specialty. Common specialties include: geriatric care, oncology. women's health, forensics, pediatric care and mental health. Classes are also offered that review particular illnesses--such as HIV--or disorders. Classes also cover bereavement and empathy to equip nurses to handle family concerns and interact with family members competently. Most states require 10 to 30 hours of continuing education every two years. Sometimes a mandated number of work hours can fulfill this requirement instead of classes. Taking continuing education classes keeps nurses abreast of the latest technology and procedures so that they can provide better care for patients despite ever-changing medical science.
