It is estimated that domestic violence costs our country between $5 billion and $10 billion annually. The Inter-American Developmental Bank categorizes these costs four ways: direct costs, nonmonetary costs, economic multiplier effects and social multiplier effects.
These include funds spent on medical treatment, police services, social services, prosecutions and prisons. Shelters and safe houses for the abused also drain budgets. The U.S. Conference of Mayors conducted a study in 1998 that revealed that in 46 percent of cities surveyed, domestic violence was the No. 1 cause of homelessness.
These include the draining of vital life from society due to homicide, suicide, drug and alcohol dependence, and depression or other such ills. In 1992, 28 percent of women who died by violent means were killed by husbands or boyfriends.
It is estimated that as many as 30 percent of women who are victims of domestic violence lose their jobs because of it. Children raised in violent homes suffer academically and often repeat grades, increasing costs to public school systems.
The tendency to violence is often passed on to subsequent generations. Children who witness this type of behavior consider it to be acceptable as adults.
