Different types and brands of printers take different types of toner cartridges, which may or may not contain all the consumable components necessary for printing.
Toner Cartridges
The three basic types of toner cartridges include cylinder cartridges, toner-developer combinations, and all-in-one cartridge units, according to The TMH Corporation.
Toner Cartridge Cylinder
This simple form of toner cartridge includes a box or cylinder containing the toner but no other consumables. These cartridges appear on larger printers or copiers designed for heavy use.
Toner-Developer Combinations
A toner-developer cartridge combines both of these necessary compounds into a single unit for simpler replacement. This type of cartridge requires the user to replace the toner drum separately.
All-in-one Cartridges
The popular all-in-one cartridge design includes all the consumable parts of the printer, including toner, developer, and toner drum, within a single disposable unit.
Considerations
The TMH Corporation points out a printer's "per-page" cost includes all consumable components. A cylinder cartridge, for instance, may cost less individually than an all-in-one cartridge, but that amount does not include the cost of other consumables the user may also have to purchase.
