According to the Mayo Clinic, statins are becoming one of the most popular cholesterol medications of the 21st century. In addition to effectively lowering cholesterol, statins are believed to help prevent serious diseases.
Significance
Statins function by blocking a substance the body needs to produce cholesterol. Statins also function by assisting the body in cholesterol reabsorption from buildup on artery walls, preventing further blockage in blood vessels.
Types
According to the Mayo Clinic, types of statin medications include atorvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin. Dosage usually ranges from 5 mg to 80 mg.
Additional Benefits
The Mayo Clinic states that statins also are beneficial for their anti-inflammatory properties. These properties stabilize blood vessel linings, which in turn can reduce the chance of heart attack and lower blood pressure.
Considerations
Statins also can reduce the risk of blood clots. Doctors are utilizing statins' blood-thinning effects before and after angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgeries and after certain types of strokes.
Potential
The Mayo Clinic states that statins have the potential to prevent complications from arthritis and bone fractures. Statins are also believed to protect the kidneys and reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzhiemer's disease.
