Chronic back pain and neuropathy or nerve pain can be caused by conditions such as a herniated disc or other spinal irregularities. Back discs or vertebrae can put pressure on nerve endings and cause radiating pain and even numbness in the hips and legs. Most back pain and neuropathy can be treated without surgery.
Significance
People with back pain and neuropathy need to stop all physical activity and rest for a couple days. This helps prevent further aggravation of any injury or condition, according to the National Institute of Nuerological Disorders and Stroke.
Types of Treatment
Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can help relieve inflammation and pain from back pain and neuropathy. A doctor may prescribe corticosteroids or antidepressants for more severe pain.
Other Types of Treatment
Ice packs can help reduce the initial inflammation and swelling of back pain and neuropathy. Heat can then be used to promote blood flow and relax the muscles and nerves.
Effects of Exercise
Those who have back pain and neuropathy should do stretching exercises, swim and stay active once the initial pain has subsided. Exercise can help strengthen back muscles and add stability to the injured area.
Considerations
If conventional treatments are ineffective, try spinal manipulation, traction, acupuncture, ultrasound or even biofeedback. Some people may require surgery.
