Torenia is also called the wishbone flower and is a member of the snapdragon family. It is a bushy, tubular annual plant that is two-lipped. The upper lip is two-lobed, and the lower lip is three-lobed with a splotch of yellow in the middle. It thrives in sun or semi-shady areas. Torenia can grow from 6 inches to a foot tall, but it can spread up to 30 inches. With proper care and nourishment, torenia can be an added delight to your garden.

Torenia is native to the high altitudes of Asia and Africa. The leaves of the torenia are heart-shaped or oval with noticeable markings on the petals. It comes in a variety of colors including blue, pink, light blue and white with markings of yellow, purple and dark blue. The torenia needs to be nourished in fertile soil that is well-drained but moist. When it is grown inside, ventilation and plenty of filtered light are necessary. Torenia is grown rather effortlessly in areas that have moderate weather. Torenia grows best in a warm climate.

Torenia seeds should be sown in the middle of the spring, when temperatures are around 64 degrees and the possibility of frost has passed. Torenia plants grow best in soil that has been mixed with clean sand and in an area that welcomes sunlight, along with periods of shade. They should be planted approximately 8 inches apart. Water and apply an inch of mulch. For the first 30 days, torenia should be watered three times a week to encourage root stability. When the torenia is established, once-a-week watering is sufficient. Apply 10-10-10 Npk fertilizer once a month to further nourishment. Concerns with torenia are root rot, mildew and Botrytis, a plant fungus.
