Bowel cancer is a form of cancer affecting the large bowel and the rectum. It takes place when cancer cells are present on the bowel or rectum's wall often spreading to other parts of the body, a process known as ''metastasis''.
Considerations
While the real trigger of bowel cancer remains unknown, there are many predisposing factors that may be suspected of possibly causing this disease. Knowing these predisposing factors therefore may play a role in preventing bowel cancer.
Smoking
People smoking long term are more likely to develop bowel cancer than non smokers according to Beatingbowelcancer.org. Quitting smoking therefore may lower the chances of bowel cancer along with several other significant health benefits.
Unhealthy Diet
Eating foods too rich in fats may increase the likeliness of getting bowel cancer. A high intake of dietary fiber along with fruits and vegetables is recommended for prevention according to Bernard Levin, MD, who chairs the ACS National Advisory Task Force on Colorectal Cancer and is vice president for cancer prevention at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Inactive Lifestyle
People who are physically inactive have higher chances of developing bowel cancer than those who exercise regularly. An active lifestyle therefore may reduce the chances of bowel cancer and other diseases.
Facts
It has been observed that 83% of people developing bowel cancer are over the age of 60 according to Beatingbowelcancer.org. Also, the chances of developing bowel cancer are higher in those having a family history of bowel cancer or being affected from some forms of bowel disease.
