On June 12, 2009, the United States federal government mandated that all television stations must broadcast with an all-digital signal. In order to receive that signal, you need the proper equipment.
History
Analog television frequencies were interfering with some of the transmissions to emergency authorities. To free up the airwaves, the federal government made all television stations switch to digital signal.
Function
For a television to receive a digital signal, it must have a built-in digital tuner. If your television was manufactured before 1998, you will need to purchase a digital conversion box or contact your local cable or satellite company to have their service installed into your home.
Features
If you are not hooked up to a cable or satellite service, you will need an antenna to receive digital signals. The correct antenna is the combination rabbit ears and circular antenna that receives UHF and VHF signals.
Considerations
If your television reception is weak, then you may need either a stronger indoor digital antenna or you may need to install an external antenna on your roof. Make sure the antenna is rated to receive digital signals.
Misconceptions
You do not need to subscribe to a cable or satellite service to receive digital television signals. With a digital converter box and the proper antenna, you can receive your local digital-broadcast channels for free.
