Venous leg ulcers are painful skin lesions that usually form on the lower leg and are caused by a malfunctioning of the veins.
Venous Insufficiency
Venous leg ulcers are caused by venous insufficiency, which means that blood is not traveling through the veins back to the heart as it should due to vein damage. The blood pools in the legs, destroying surrounding tissue and causing an ulcer.
Diabetes
Leg and foot problems are often associated with diabetes; however, diabetes issues more often affect the foot area. Venous leg ulcers occur in the lower calf and ankle.
Appearance
The area of the ulcer becomes raw, red and inflamed. The surrounding skin may be purple in color, like a bruise. The wound may become infected and weep liquid.
Varicose Eczema
Venous insufficiency also leads to varicose eczema around the areas of ulceration, which gives the skin a scaly appearance and feel.
Swelling
Venous leg ulcers can cause severe swelling of the feet, ankles and legs. The ankles and lower calf may narrow, with swelling underneath the knees.
