Discolored toenails are the sign of a fungal infection. Also known as onychomycosis, you can contract this fungus at public places with warm and moist conditions--such as a gym or pool--where people go barefoot. While the condition is unsightly, there options available for treatment.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a fungal infection of the toenail include discoloration, thickness, strange nail shape, and loosening of the nail away from the bed.
Creams
According to FootAnkle.com, there are over-the-counter medications creams and ointments you can buy that claim to kill off the fungus. However, while these medications can reduce your symptoms, they rarely completely get rid of the fungus.
Medicine
Certain oral medications can help fight off fungal infections. Medicines such as terbinafine and itraconazole can help the new nail grow in fungus-free. However, the entire process can take six to 12 weeks to get rid of discoloration.
Antifungal Lacquer
Ciclopirox is an antifungal lacquer that is applied much like nail polish. While less invasive than medication, this treatment can take up to a year to be effective.
Surgery
In severe cases, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the entire toenail. Often used in combination with ciclopirox, surgery will eradicate the infection. However, toenails grow slowly and it can be a year before a new nail has completely grown in.
