Excessive dry scalp can lead to flaky skin, patchy areas on the head and hair loss. There are quite a few possible causes of excessive dry scalp, ranging from the weather and hair hygiene, to cosmetics usage and diet.
Weather
Winter brings about a sudden drop in moisture in the air. This environmental dryness can affect the condition of your scalp and hair, leading to a gravely dry scalp.
Hot Showers
Extremely hot showers or direct application of hot water on the hair can lead to heating of the scalp and, consequently, extreme dryness.
Hair Washing
While washing your hair, make sure to properly rinse away the shampoo before application of conditioner. A conditioner usually has the tendency to make your hair smooth on the outside, while trapping any residue soap particles on the scalp, leading to flakiness later.
Hair Products
If your scalp is dry in general and you use hair-care products for oily scalps, your problem will be further aggravated. Application of cosmetics unsuitable for your scalp type can make your condition worse.
Other Causes
Less than sufficient water intake, faulty diet, emotional stress, physical trauma and certain medications also can be reasons behind excessively dry scalps.
