<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Path to Self-Expression
Your hair color is a way to express yourself---bleach blond shouts you're ready to hit the waves, green or pink shows that you have punk-rock values, black might say that you are thoughtful and poetic. Unlike women, men are not culturally pressured to dye their hair to become more sexually appealing, and unlike older men, they do not have gray to cover up, so hair dying can become a fun way to announce to the world who you are.
On the Other: Temporary Change
If you have short hair, like many men, it will take mere weeks or months to grow out dyed hair, rendering the hair color an impermanent change--a characteristic desirable to some and not others. If your hair is a funky color, it means that you'll be able to "clean up" for a job or family function more easily than if you got knuckle tattoos, but it also means for all types of dye jobs that you'll have to do touch-ups frequently to keep from looking messy.
Bottom Line
If you are looking for a relatively simple, impermanent way to express your cultural values and attract others like you, dying your hair is a great way to do it. It is easily reversed, but it can become a hassle to keep up with touch-ups.
