Many individuals who are infected with herpes, or HSV, may not even realize they have it. The Centers for Disease Control state that at least 45 million people over the age of 12 have had a genital HSV infection, so it is important to recognize the possible signs.
Itching
The first sign of herpes is usually itching around the genital area, typically a few weeks after exposure.
Pain
Along with itching, the individual may experience pain around the genitals, buttocks, or thighs.
Sores
The first visual symptom is usually small red bumps that may become blisters or ulcers. These sores may occur externally around the genitals, or even inside the vaginal area for women, or the urethra for men.
Flu-Like Symptoms
With a herpes infection, the individual may also experience flu-like symptoms, such as fever, swollen glands, or muscle aches.
Considerations
Signs of herpes infection vary from person to person. Symptoms can recur for years, and it may be possible to spread herpes even when there are no active sores. If you suspect that you may be infected with herpes, you should see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
