Discount health insurance may be the only option for low-income people or freelancers. This way, you get access to a clinic, doctor or hospital without having to pay the full price in order to receive medical care. In addition, most discount plans also allow you to buy prescriptions at a reduced price.

On the Other: Not the real deal

Most discount health insurers are actually not insurance plans. Rather they are, according to the Federal Trade Commission, "medical discount plans." Unlike a regular health care plan, where you pay a co-payment or a deduction, you pay a percentage of the price of the visit or drug. Furthermore, not all surgeries or other medical procedures are provided for.

    Bottom Line

If the medical discount plan is the only plan you can afford, you should purchase it, since it's at least something that can reduce your health care prices. However, if you have health care already, you may consider sticking with that plan. In some cases though, discount plans can be combined with health care plans to further boost your health care coverage or reduce prices.
