The prevailing advice from gardening experts says morning is the best time to water your plants, whether they're indoors or out in the garden--but particularly if they're outdoors. Mornings are usually cool, without a lot of wind, allowing the water to sink in before direct sun or strong breezes cause it to evaporate.

On the Other: Water in the late afternoon

Late afternoon, after the hottest part of the day but before the sun goes down, can be similar in temperature to mornings. Watering at this time also will help prevent losing a lot of moisture through evaporation. However, you should water early enough that the plant leaves will be dry before dark; wet leaves can develop fungal diseases in the dark.

    Bottom Line

Watering your plants in the mid-afternoon, the hottest part of the day, is your worst option. It wastes a lot of water through evaporation. It's best to water in the morning, but if you can't do that, watering in late afternoon is still a good option as long as you're careful not to leave the plants wet overnight.
