Orthopedics is the study of the musculoskeletal system, which is the structure of bones that are located within the human body. There are 206 bones that make up the musculoskeletal system and these bones are separated into two main parts.
Primary Parts
Bones are made up of two primary parts. The head and the torso is considered one part. The arms and legs are the other.
Composition
Solid substance located on the outside of the bone is called compact bone. Cancellous bone is the sponge like substance located inside of the bone. Together both of these substances make up the composition of the bone.
Classifications
Bones are placed in five general classifications, which include the long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones, and Sesamoid bones.
Fused and Individual
Ligaments, tendons, muscles, and cartilage are a part of the bone system since they attach and support fused and individual bones.
Joints
Joints allow bones to move. Where two or more bones are joined together forms a joint. Ligaments are strong tissues which hold the joint together.
